The New Zealand grizzly bear is a subspecies of brown bear that is native to New Zealand. It is descended from prehistoric brown bears, despite its name, that rafted all the way from southeastern Asia to New Zealand. They are omnivores that feed on berries, grass, insects, fishes, frogs, small reptiles, birds (including moas, kakapos, etc), and New Zealand giant dylanuses. They are much smaller than any other brown/grizzly bears, about twice the size of an American black bear, due to insular dwarfism. They are much less aggressive than most other bear species, being almost completely tame towards humans, domestic dylanses, and other sapient species/beings, so humans and other sapient species/beings allow these bears to live in human settlements in New Zealand.
